What happens if I give AdvanceMeToday my contacts?
If you provide AdvanceMeToday with your contacts (either via app permissions or manually typing their names/numbers on a loan application), here is what they can and likely will do:
What They Can Do With Your Contacts:
- Harassment Leverage: They will call, text, and message your contacts repeatedly to "locate" you if you miss a payment.
- Social Pressure Tactics: They may tell your contacts you owe money, causing embarrassment and damaging your reputation.
- Workplace Calls: If you list a work number or a coworker, they may call your employer, potentially endangering your job.
- Reference Abuse: They will treat any contact you provide as permission to call them at any hour, including early morning or late night.
- Data Sale: Illegal lenders often sell contact lists to other predatory companies.
How to Protect Yourself:
- Do NOT provide real contact information. Use a Google Voice number or a secondary email address.
- If forced to provide references, inform those people in advance: "A company may contact you. Do not verify any information about me. Tell them you don't know me and hang up."
- Immediately revoke all app permissions if you have installed any loan app.
