Common Loan Scams and How to Avoid Them

Back

Loan scams are on the rise in Nigeria. Fake apps, unregulated lenders, and social media imposters are targeting desperate borrowers with promises of "instant cash" . Here's how to spot them and protect yourself.

What Loan Scams Look Like

Extreme Interest Rates

  • Apps charge 40%–70% interest due in 5–8 days
  • One borrower was charged 21.6% interest on a ₦30,000 loan due in two weeks—an annualized cost of over 560%
  • Legitimate lenders must offer repayment periods of at least 60 days

Harassment & Data Abuse

  • Apps access your contacts, photos, and messages
  • They send shaming messages to your family, boss, and friends
  • They may threaten you, share fake obituaries, or leak private photos
  • One victim reported 200 missed calls in a single morning

Fake Social Media Pages

  • Scammers impersonate banks like First Bank and GTBank on Facebook
  • They promise "low interest of 0.1%" and "no BVN required"
  • They ask for sensitive banking details or upfront fees

How to Spot a Fake Loan App (Red Flag)

  • Unrealistic promises (guaranteed approval, no documents)
  • Upfront fees
  • Requests for excessive permissions (contacts, photos, messages)
  • Unclear interest rates or vague repayment terms
  • No customer support or physical address
  • Short repayment periods (7–14 days): Violates Google policy and Nigerian law

How to Protect Yourself

Before You Borrow:

  • ✅ Verify FCCPC approval on the official FCCPC website
  • ✅ Read reviews on the Play Store or App Store
  • ✅ Stick with reputable banks and licensed lenders
  • ✅ Avoid APK downloads from WhatsApp, Telegram, or unofficial websites
  • ✅ Never pay upfront fees for a loan

If You're Being Harassed:

  • 📱 Revoke app permissions immediately (Settings > Apps > Permissions)
  • 📸 Document everything: screenshots, call logs, messages
  • 📧 Send a formal complaint to the app's customer support
  • 📞 Report to the FCCPC: contact@fccpc.gov.ng or lenderstaskforce@fccpc.gov.ng
  • 📋 Report to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission for privacy breaches
  • 👩‍⚖️ Consult a lawyer if you've been defamed or threatened
