No loan apps downloaded from the Play Store can access your contacts — don’t be deceived!

Google is adding more restrictions to all Loan apps globally

Thanks to Google’s new policies, you can now have peace of mind knowing that loan apps on the Play Store cannot defame you or misuse your data.

Starting April 30, 2025, any loan app that fails to comply with these rules will be removed from the Play Store by May 28, 2025.

Now, let me explain each permission and how it works.

1. READ_CONTACTS (Implemented since 2023)

What it does: Allows the app to access your phone's contact list.

How it's misused: Loan apps harass your contacts with repayment reminders or shame messages.

2. READ_CALL_LOG (Implemented since 2023)

What it does: Lets the app see your call history (who you called/received calls from).

How it's misused: To profile your social network for debt recovery.

3. READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE

What it does: Accesses files on your device (photos, documents, downloads).

How it's misused: Scans for personal data or embarrassing content to blackmail you.

4. READ_MEDIA_IMAGES (Android 13+)

What it does: Specifically accesses only your photos (more limited than READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE).

How it's misused: Extracts personal photos for intimidation.

5. ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION

What it does: Tracks your precise GPS location (within meters).

How it's misused: Sends debt collectors to your home/workplace.

6. READ_PHONE_NUMBERS

What it does: Reads your SIM card number and linked phone numbers.

How it's misused: Bypasses contact restrictions to reach you via alternate numbers.

7. READ_MEDIA_VIDEOS (Android 13+)

What it does: Accesses only your video files.

How it's misused: Extracts compromising videos.

8. QUERY_ALL_PACKAGES

What it does: Lists all apps installed on your phone.

How it's misused: Checks if you use competing loan apps or banking apps to profile your finances.

9. WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE

What it does: Saves/modifies files on your device.

How it's misused: Saves call recordings or screenshots without consent.
