How do I know if my data was exposed in a loan app breach?

Back

Detection is difficult because loan apps rarely notify victims. Here's how to check:

Signs Your Data Was Exposed:

  • You receive calls about loans you never applied for: Your ID was used for fraudulent applications
  • Friends/family report calls about your debt: Your contacts were exfiltrated
  • Unexpected loan deductions from your bank: Your financial information was compromised
  • Social media posts impersonating you: Your photos/ID were stolen

Proactive Steps:

  1. Monitor your credit reports for unauthorized loan applications (use free annual credit reports)
  2. Check HaveIBeenPwned (though loan app breaches are often underreported)
  3. Watch for phishing attempts targeting your email/phone
  4. Enroll in credit monitoring if offered—PayPal offered affected users two years of free monitoring through Equifax after their breach
