How do I revoke data permissions for loan apps on my phone?
You can revoke permissions at any time through your phone's settings, but note that the app may already have exfiltrated your data.
Android (steps may vary slightly by version):
- Settings → Apps → [Loan App Name] → Permissions
- For each permission (Contacts, SMS, Location, Files/Media):
- Tap the permission
- Select "Deny" (or uncheck)
- Back to App Info → Uninstall (recommended final step)
iPhone (iOS):
- Settings → Privacy & Security
- Tap each permission category (Contacts, Location, Photos)
- Find the loan app and toggle OFF
Critical Note: Revoking permissions stops future access but does NOT delete data already transmitted to the app's servers. The World Bank notes that "consumers are not allowed to view, correct, or control their data trail" in many cases .
What to do after revoking permissions:
- Uninstall the app completely
- If you have an outstanding loan, use the website instead
- Report the app to Google Play (three dots → Flag as inappropriate)
