The 7-Step Formula for Financial Destruction with Predatory Loan Apps
Across all 20 countries, predatory loan apps follow the same criminal playbook:
Step 1: The Bait
Advertise "instant cash," "0.1% interest," "no credit check," "up to GH¢8,000" or "₹50,000 in 5 minutes".
Step 2: The Installation Trap
Require permissions to access contacts, photos, storage, and location data. Most users click "Allow" without reading.
Step 3: The Disbursement Deception
Lend far less than promised. A loan of GH¢130 becomes GH¢89 in hand. Hidden "processing fees" and "service charges" disappear before the borrower sees the money.
Step 4: The Invisible Interest
Hide the true cost. Advertise "0.5% daily interest" but add "verification fees," "membership charges," and "late penalties" that multiply the real APR to 200% or more.
Step 5: The Short Fuse
Set impossible repayment windows—often 7 days or less. Then call starting on day 6.
Step 6: The Harassment Machine
When payment is late (or even on time), unleash the terror: threat calls every hour, morphed obscene images, messages to every contact in the phone, public shaming on WhatsApp.
Step 7: The Rollover Trap
Offer to "extend" the loan for a fee. The borrower pays the fee but the principal never decreases. Repeat until the borrower is drained dry
