Not every loan app is legitimate. Fraudsters create fake loan apps to steal personal data, demand upfront fees, or even take over bank accounts. In Nigeria, where digital literacy varies, many people lose money before ever receiving a loan.

Example:

  • PinjamPalsu asks for a ₦5,000 "processing fee" before releasing a ₦50,000 loan. After payment, the app disappears.
  • UtangScam  requests access to contacts and photos. Later, they use those images to blackmail the borrower for fake "late fees."
  • A fake SMS claims: "Your loan from KreditCepat is approved. Click this link to claim." The link steals banking details.

Step-by-Step Solutions:

  1. Never pay upfront fees – Legitimate loan apps deduct fees from the loan amount, not before.
  2. Check app permissions – A loan app does not need access to your photos, contacts, or location. Deny these.
  3. Verify app legitimacy – Search for: app name + "scam" or "review" + "Nigeria". Read recent Play Store comments.
  4. Avoid loan links in SMS or WhatsApp – Always go directly to the Play Store or official website.
  5. Check NCC or CBN approval – Legitimate digital lenders in Nigeria are listed with the Central Bank of Nigeria or approved by the FCCPC.
  6. Use a separate bank account for loan apps – Keep minimal funds in it to limit theft risk.
  7. If scammed, act fast:
  • Contact your bank immediately to freeze the account.
  • Report to the Nigeria Police Force Cybercrime Unit.
  • Report to the FCCPC.
  • Leave a 1-star review on the Play Store to warn others.
