What are the red flags that CheckMate is a loan shark or not?

Back

If you encounter a "CheckMate" mobile loan app, apply this checklist. If ANY condition is met, stay away immediately:

  • 🚩 Multiple Identities / Name Confusion: The lender uses a name that matches multiple unrelated businesses. This makes it impossible to verify who you are actually borrowing from. CheckMate MEETS this condition â€“ loan storefronts exist but no unified app.
  • 🚩 No Verifiable Physical Address: While physical CheckMate locations exist (e.g., 5201 E 4th Plain Blvd, Vancouver, WA), the app version does not publish a valid address. A genuine lender publishes their street address clearly.
  • 🚩 Requests Unnecessary Permissions: A loan app asking for access to your contacts, photos, location, or storage when all they need is your identity and bank details. Check this immediately in your phone settings.
  • 🚩 No Credit Check / Instant Approval Regardless of History: Legitimate lenders evaluate your ability to repay. Loan sharks approve everyone instantly because they plan to use harassment, not legal collection.
  • 🚩 Upfront Fees Before Loan Disbursement: Any request for an "processing fee," "insurance fee," or "registration fee" before you receive the loan money is the #1 sign of an advance-fee scam.
  • 🚩 Vague or Missing License Information: The app does not display a state-issued lending license number. Physical CheckMate locations are licensed as "Personal Finance Licensed Loan Companies" in Washington state , but no license information exists for a mobile app version.
  • 🚩 No Published Interest Rate (APR): Legitimate lenders must disclose the Annual Percentage Rate. Loan sharks hide this until after you sign.
  • 🚩 Pressure to Act Quickly: "Limited time offer!" or "Approval expires in 1 hour!" are classic pressure tactics to prevent you from reading the fine print.
