Can Mangu Cash report me to credit bureaus for non-payment?

Back

This is unclear. Mangu Cash does not explicitly state whether they report to credit bureaus. However, given their collection practices (harassing contacts directly), they may rely on intimidation rather than formal credit reporting systems.

How Credit Reporting Works in Uganda

Uganda has a relatively new credit reporting system. The Bank of Uganda licenses credit reference bureaus (CRBs) such as:

  • Compuscan Uganda
  • Metropol Credit Reference Bureau
  • CRB Africa

Banks, microfinance institutions, and other regulated lenders are required to report borrower data to these bureaus. However, Mangu Cash is not a regulated lender. The government has stated they are operating illegally .

What This Means for You

Scenario A: Mangu Cash does NOT report to credit bureaus

  • Your on-time payments will NOT help you build a credit history
  • Your late payments will NOT appear on your credit report (initially)
  • However, they can still harass you and your contacts

Scenario B: Mangu Cash sells your debt to a collection agency that does report

  • Even if Mangu Cash does not report directly, they could sell your defaulted debt to a collection agency
  • That collection agency might then report the default to credit bureaus
  • This could hurt your ability to get loans from banks in the future

Scenario C: The Bank of Uganda takes enforcement action

Given the government's statements, the Bank of Uganda may eventually take action against Mangu Cash. If the company is shut down, it is unclear what happens to borrower data or outstanding debts.

The More Immediate Concern: Harassment, Not Credit

For most borrowers, the bigger risk with Mangu Cash is not credit reporting. It is the harassment documented in multiple news reports .

As one victim said, after missing a payment, Mangu Cash agents "called and threatened my mother and my siblings that I should pay the loan" .

Step-by-Step Action

  • Step 1: Do not assume that defaulting on Mangu Cash will not impact you. Even if they do not report to credit bureaus, they may harass you and your family.
  • Step 2: If you have defaulted and are being harassed, document everything.
  • Step 3: File a complaint with the Bank of Uganda.
  • Step 4: File a police report if you are threatened.
  • Step 5: Pay only what you actually owe. Do not pay extra fees charged illegally.
