How do I file a complaint against a loan app?

Back

In Nigeria, the primary government agency responsible for protecting consumers from unfair practices by loan apps is the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC). Filing a complaint is a straightforward process, and you do not need a lawyer to initiate it. The FCCPC has the power to investigate digital lenders, order them to stop harassing you, and even de-list their apps from app stores for violations .

You can file a complaint through three main channels:

  1. Online Portal: Visit the official FCCPC website at fccpc.gov.ng, navigate to the "File a Complaint" section, and fill out the online form.
  2. Email: Send a detailed email describing the issue to contact@fccpc.gov.ng.
  3. Social Media: Send a direct message to the FCCPC's official handle on X (formerly Twitter) .

Example/Illustration of What to Include:

To make your complaint strong and easy for the FCCPC to act on, you should provide specific information. Imagine you are filing a report against a loan app called "QuickCash."

Here is a checklist of what to provide:

  • Loan App Details: The full name of the app ("QuickCash") and, if possible, its contact email or phone number.
  • Your Information: Your name and the phone number registered with the app.
  • Description of the Issue: A clear, factual account of what happened. For example: "After I missed my repayment date by 3 days, QuickCash sent a message to my boss and several family members calling me a 'deadbeat fraudster' and threatening to publish my personal photos online."
  • Evidence (Crucial): Screenshots of all threatening messages, call logs, and any posts on social media.
  • Loan Details: The amount you borrowed, the date, and any repayment transaction IDs, if you have made payments
