Can 50kLoans access my phone contacts and photos

Back

If you are using 50kLoans through a mobile app, yes — they can access your contacts and photos IF you grant permission. If you are using the website only, no — websites have much more limited access to your phone.

How Loan Apps Access Your Data

Let me explain this in plain language.

When you install any app on your phone, it must ask for your permission to access certain features. These are called "permissions." The RBI in India has specifically warned about loan apps asking for excessive permissions .

Common permissions loan apps request:

Contacts access – The app can read all the names and phone numbers saved in your phone

Photos/Media access – The app can read, modify, or delete your photos and files

Camera access – The app can take pictures or record video

Location access – The app can track where you are

SMS access – The app can read your text messages

Call log access – The app can see who you have called and when

Storage access – The app can read everything saved on your phone

Why Do Loan Apps Want This Data?

According to reports and regulatory findings, loan apps ask for this data for several reasons :

Reason 1: "To verify your creditworthiness"

They claim to check your SMS for salary credits or bill payments. But once they have this data, they keep it.

Reason 2: "For fraud prevention"

They want to see if you have other loans. But they also use this data to build profiles on you.

Reason 3: "To find alternate contacts"

They say they need your contacts in case they cannot reach you. But they use these contacts to shame and threaten you if you miss a payment.

Reason 4: "To confirm your identity"

They may need camera access for KYC (Know Your Customer) verification. This is legitimate — but only for that specific purpose, and only with your explicit consent for that one-time use.

How to Check If 50kLoans (or Any Loan App) Has Access to Your Data

For Android users:

  • Open your phone Settings
  • Tap on "Apps" or "Application Manager"
  • Find the loan app in the list
  • Tap on "Permissions"
  • You will see a list of everything the app can access

For iPhone users:

  • Open Settings
  • Scroll down and tap on the loan app
  • You will see each permission listed with a toggle switch

What You Should See (and What You Should NOT See)

Acceptable permissions (may be necessary for some functions):

  • Camera (for ID verification, ONE TIME)
  • Storage (to save basic app data)

Red flag permissions (NOT necessary for a loan app):

  • Contacts access — they do NOT need to know your mother's phone number
  • SMS access — they do NOT need to read your text messages
  • Call log access — they do NOT need to see who you call
  • Location access — they do NOT need to track where you are
  • Full photo access — they do NOT need to see your vacation pictures

The RBI's May 2025 guidelines explicitly state: "A one-time access can be taken for camera, microphone, location or any other facility necessary for the purpose of on-boarding/KYC requirements only, with the explicit consent of the borrower" .

Important Warning About Older App Versions

If you have been using any loan app since before 2024, there is a very high chance they already have access to your data.

Why? Because in the past, many loan apps asked for broad permissions, and users clicked "Allow" without thinking. Once you grant permission, the app keeps that access until you manually revoke it.

Even if the app has updated its privacy policy, older versions may have already harvested your data.

What to Do Right Now

  • Step 1: Immediately check your permissions using the steps above.
  • Step 2: If you see Contacts, SMS, Call Log, or Location access, TURN THEM OFF.
  • Step 3: If the app stops working after you revoke permissions, that is a massive red flag. Uninstall the app immediately.
  • Step 4: Even if you revoke permissions, assume any data already collected is gone. The app may have already copied your contacts and messages.
  • Step 5: If you have been using the app for a while, consider changing your passwords and monitoring your credit reports.

The Bottom Line

No legitimate lender needs access to your contacts or photos. None. Zero. If an app asks for these permissions, they are planning to use them against you — either by selling your data or harassing your contacts if you miss a payment .

Mukesh Pandey, Director of Rupyaa Paisa, advises: "Borrowers must also be able to withdraw their consent, restrict sharing, or delete the data. I recommend that users be vigilant: download apps only from reputable sources, attentive to app permissions, and ensure that the lending platform is RBI-licensed" .
