Can loan apps record my phone calls?

Legitimate loan apps cannot record phone calls on standard Android or iOS due to operating system restrictions. However, malicious apps can use workarounds.

How malicious apps circumvent restrictions:

1. Request RECORD_AUDIO permission under false pretenses (e.g., "for voice authentication")
2. Use accessibility services to capture screen content during calls
3. Request screen recording permissions that can capture call screens
4. Install additional malware components after initial installation

Example: The ngCERT advisory warns that loan shark apps request "extensive permissions to access sensitive data" but does not explicitly list call recording—however, the combination of storage, media, and audio permissions can enable surreptitious recording .

Red Flag: If any loan app requests RECORD_AUDIO permission, uninstall it immediately.
