What happens if I give CheckMate access to my contacts?
If you grant contact access to a predatory lending app (including any fake "CheckMate" app), here is exactly what happens:
Immediate Consequences:
- 📱 The app uploads your entire contact list to its server within seconds
- 🗂️ Every contact name, phone number, email address, and relationship note (e.g., "Mom," "Boss John") is stored
- 🔗 The app builds a social graph connecting you to everyone you know
If You Repay Late or Default:
The lender can and will:
- Call your workplace reception and ask for you by name, implying a debt collection purpose
- Text your family members with shaming messages like "Urgent: Your relative [Your Name] has an overdue loan. Contact them immediately."
- Threaten to expose your debt to your employer, potentially damaging your professional reputation
- Post on social media tagging your contacts (illegal, but happens)
- Send WhatsApp messages to your contacts impersonating you or spreading false information
What They Cannot Legally Do:
- Disclose the existence of your debt to third parties (violation of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act in the US)
- Harass your contacts repeatedly after being asked to stop
- Threaten violence or illegal action
Protection Strategy:
- Never grant contact permission to any loan app
- Use a secondary phone number (Google Voice, burner SIM) for loan applications
- Create a separate email address specifically for financial apps
- Remove any existing app permissions immediately via your phone settings
