Why do some loan apps have 5-star ratings but terrible reviews about harassment?

Back

Because fake reviews are cheap, and real victims are ignored until it is too late.

This is one of the most common tricks predatory loan apps use. It is called review manipulation.

According to experts who track illegal lending apps, scammers use several techniques to fake their ratings :

Method 1 – Buying Positive Reviews: For a few hundred dollars, scammers can buy thousands of 5-star ratings from fake accounts. These reviews often say generic things like "Great app!" or "Very helpful!" without any specific details.

Method 2 – Review Bombing After Complaints: When victims start posting 1-star reviews about harassment, scammers flood the app with even more 5-star ratings to push the negative ones down.

Method 3 – App Store Optimization (ASO): Scammers are skilled at using keywords like "instant loan" to make their apps appear at the top of search results, even though they have existed for only a few days.

Real Example

An illegal lending app might have 4.8 stars overall. But if you scroll past the first 50 five-star reviews, you will find real users saying things like:

  • "They called my boss and lied about me"
  • "They accessed my photos without permission"
  • "I borrowed ₹5,000 and they want ₹25,000 after 30 days"

But most people never scroll that far .

Step-by-Step Protection Guide

Step 1: Always sort reviews by "Lowest Rating" first. This shows you the 1-star reviews where real victims speak.

Step 2: Look for specific complaints. Fake reviews say "Good app." Real reviews say "They harassed my mother on WhatsApp."

Step 3: Check the dates of reviews. If an app has existed for 6 months but all 5-star reviews are from the same week, be suspicious.

Step 4: Cross-reference with external sources. Search "[app name] scam" or "[app name] harassment" on Google and social media.

Step 5: Report suspicious review patterns to the app store. Google and Apple have policies against fake reviews.
